commander shepard is an anomaly. she grew up on the streets in vancouver, canada as a part of a gang, the only way she knew how to survive without parents and without support. she joined the alliance military as soon as she turned eighteen to escape that life. her entire squad was massacred by thresher maws on the planet akuze and she survived, giving her long-standing survivor's guilt and post-traumatic stress. she managed to push past it, completing every level of n7 training to become one of the alliance's top operatives and later on the first human spectre, a designation that allowed her to operate above and outside the law, doing whatever it took to get the job done. she used her power to take down saren and the geth, learning of a race called the reapers, sentient machines that wipe out all sufficiently-evolved life forms every 50,000 years. despite the disbelief of the galactic council, she managed to prove her worth and save the galaxy from impending doom. with the appearance of the collectors, a species hell-bent on stealing entire races to create new reapers, they targeted shepard and her ship specifically. with her ship destroyed, shepard's last action before getting spaced was to save her pilot, joker. getting spaced definitely killed her and she was marked as dead for two years while the pro-human company cerberus collected her remains and rebuilt her from the ground up without her permission, using billions of credits to create a new body for her that was held together with as many cybernetics as they could stuff into her. the running joke is that she "almost" died because enough of her was maintained to keep her personality and memories intact, but she's bitter about the whole experience. cerberus used her for their own purposes, guilting her and trying to force her to become what they wanted her to be, but she used their money and technology to destroy the collectors and save the galaxy. again. "working with" cerberus got her thrown into military prison for six months despite her unwillingness, but the return of the reapers allowed her to be reinstated and take up the fight again. again again. for the third time shepard dragged together a team of unlikely squad mates and managed to save the galaxy from complete destruction, bringing together the races of council space (and then some) in the process. in order to destroy the reapers shepard had to destroy all synthetics. it also almost destroyed herself in the process, frying all her cybernetic parts, which had to be retooled and rebuilt before she could fully heal. however, she did it again: despite all their losses, the threat was gone. shepard is definitely a messiah character; her ability to bring together people of all races and walks of life to work at her side is unparalleled in-universe. all of her actions were done for the greater good and she did everything she could to save as many people as she could, though she may have been a little rough-around the edges at times. still, she got the job done. she is in turns charming and intimidating depending on the context, and is fiercely protective of those she cares about. she isn't free of her survivor's guilt, not really - so many people she swore to protect are gone now, and it's because she couldn't do anything to save them. still, commander shepard is the champion of the galaxy.
